And what exactly is a joke? Notes: -------- [1] Mildenhall is in West Suffolk, England. [2] A reference to John Carter from Mars, a SciFi series by E.R. Burroughs (also author of the Tarzan books). [3] Haven't been able to find this one. It sounds vaguely Welsh, but is more likely a SciFi reference. [4] Hereward the Wake was an 11th century folk hero; "The Last of the English" to hold out against the Normans. His tale is told in a famous book by Charles Kingsley. [5] This phrase ("boots were very clean") is sometimes used to indicate death -- his funeral was the only time a soldier had his boots cleaned. [6] Times are unofficial. [7] In the _Shine On_ lyrics it's "almost obliged." But it sounds like "most," I've seen it printed as "most" elsewhere, and we all know the lyrics given in _Shine On_ aren't always correct, anyway... ;)
