Analysis from 49ers Clubhouse:

Comments: Heitmann is an intelligent player, but needs to add on bulk for teams to really show strong interest in him. He has strong legs and a great ability to get downfield to block. Really has to hit the weights to bulk up and get more upper body strength.

Analysis by CBS Sportsline:

Positives: Thick-framed athlete with broad shoulders, good quickness and smooth change of direction agility…Fires out of his stance in an instant…Shows the lateral foot movement and balance needed to get to the second level…Has the athleticism to stay up and play on his feet…Knows how to take proper incline blocking angles, positioning and working with his lower body to sustain…Shows good hand usage, locking on with good hand punch in pass protection…Uses his change of direction to slide and mirror in passing situations…Stays under control and gets out well on the pull, especially kicking out on short pulls…Gets to the set point quickly to combat the blitz…Rolls his hips and will deliver a strong hand punch with his initial step…Finds his target and lands crunching blocks on screens…Shows good knee bend with the classic wide leg base setting up in pass protection…Rarely is beaten by quickness or double moves from the defender…Is especially effective blocking in space, as he compensates for a lack of explosion with proper arm extension as he adjusts to stunts.

Negatives: More of a position blocker, who tries to compensate for no explosion off the snap with finesse, but has a tendency to lean and overextend…Works well in the open, but struggles at times to land on a moving target…Can be beaten by quick spin moves, as again, he will lean into his blocks…Can get leveraged and lose anchor vs. the strong power rush…Little undersized and could use 10-15 more pounds of bulk.

CAREER NOTES

Info from Pro Football Weekly:

Notes: High school All-American from Texas. Also was an outstanding weight man in track, putting the lighter, high school shot almost 57 feet. Played in every game and lettered in 1998 as an 18-year-old true freshman. Started every game at right guard the past three years. A second-team All-Pacific-10 pick in 2000, and a first-team selection in '01, who also was an American Football Coaches Association firstteam All-American, despite missing spring ball in 2001 to have an old shoulder injury surgically repaired.

Positives: Looks like the leader of the offensive line and really seems to enjoy the game. Heitmann has never missed a game with injury, plays through pain and has very good intangibles. Has a good feel for positions and angles. Is quick off the ball, gets into his blocks quickly and works hard to sustain and finish his blocks. Can get to and adjust at the second level, pull and trap. Generally plays with good balance and can slide laterally when pass protecting.

Negatives: Lacks great size and playing strength. Average knee-bender who lacks great balance and body control. Will overextend at times. Does not anchor as well as scouts would like because he does not really sink his hips that well and lacks lower-body explosiveness.

Summary: Solid but somewhat-limited, blue-collar player who has great intangibles and enough ability to overcome his limitations if he is in the right system.

Info from CNNSI.com:

All-Conference selection the past two years and an All-American Academic award winner in the past.
Tough, nasty lineman with a nice feel for his position. Blocks with a wide base, strong in his lower body and looks to take opponents out of the action. Quick setting in pass protection, stays square, displaying good arm punch and a powerful upper body. Plays with balance, leverage and gets movement from his run blocks. Heady and quick mentally picking up his assignments or helping out his line-mates. Lacks body adjustment, overextends and does not move well in space. Not effective if asked to block on the move and better in a small area. Has size potential, durable in college and does the little things well. Mid Fifth Round.

Assessment:
Heitmann is an athletic guard who could be used by a team who likes to use a smaller athletic line (like the Broncos). Heitmann has the ability to run well in the open field and can be used on sweeps and pulling assignments. Heitmann is able to get downfield so well because he has excellent vision and takes terrific blocking angles when he is moving. Heitmann doesn't have a lot of upper body strength but his strong legs and leg drive compensate for that factor. Heitmann might have to add some weight if he goes to a team that wants a bulkier guard. He has plenty of height and 10-15 pounds should not affect his speed in the open field. Intelligent player who could be used immediately in a reserve role.
