Descriptions:

This bracket provides one optical input and one optical output for your SBLive! Value sound card, which allows you to connect your Minidisc deck to the computer. You can record music digitally from your minidisc to the computer, and the other way around. I am not sure whether this setup will set the SCMS bits to "Unlimited copy" since I have not tested this, but it will at least set the SCMS to "One copy allowed"--I tried to record the same music digitally couple times and it works. The parts of this project will only cost you $20. You will need one toslink transmitter (SHARP GP1F32T) and one toslink receiver (GP1F32R) ($10 each), which is available through Linus P. Sweers (lpsweers@juno.com). The connections here are super easy. All you need to do is just solder a couple wires to connect the toslink modules to the headers on the soundcard. I will show the steps below.

Disclaimer:

You are on your own risk to build this circuit. I will not be held responsible for any damages that may happen to your computer, sound card, and/or minidisc recorders/players. I will also provide no support or guarantee for the informations provided here if any problems occur. Proceed with your own risk!
I will not be held responsible for the fact that this setup will allow multiple digital copies of MDs. This project is only a toslink interface for the SBLive! Value sound card, and does not alter the sound card and/or the card's functions in anyway. DO NOT USE THIS SETUP TO MAKE ILLEGAL DIGITAL COPIES.

How to do this:

Before you do anything, you need to know all the pin configurations. **CAUTION** I am using the toslink modules from Sharp, and if you want to use toslink modules from some other manufacturers, the pin configurations may not be the same.

Diagram #2: Pin configuration of S/PDIF extension on SBLive! Value.

After knowing the pin configurations, just connect the toslink modules to the sound card. You will also need a +5V power supply for the toslink modules. This can be accomplished using one of the 4pins power socket inside your computer. **CAUTION** Check the voltage before you turn on the computer, if it is more than +5V, it can fry the toslink modules.

Diagram #3: Circuit scheme.

After you solder everything, just find a bracket and mount the toslink modules on it. Before you turn on your computer, take a final check on all connections and the polarities. If everything is fine, you should now be able to record and playback music digitally to and from your minidisc. Good luck and enjoy!
