Chemistry is one of the five prize areas mentioned in Alfred Nobel's will. The will was, however, partly incomplete. Nobel simply stated that prizes be given to those who, during the preceding year, "shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind" and that one part be given to the person who "shall have made the most important chemical discovery or improvement." He also designated the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences to award the Chemistry Prize and it was his express wish that, in awarding the Prize, "no consideration shall be given to the nationality of the candidates, but that the most worthy shall receive it, whether he be Scandinavian or not."

La chimica è una delle cinque aree per i premi menzionate nelle ultime volontà di Alfred Nobel. Il testamento era però parzialmente incompleto. Testualmente Nobel disse che il premio doveva essere dato a chi nel l'anno precedente "avesse conferito il maggiore beneficio all'umanità" e che una parte fosse data a chi "avesse fatto la più importante scoperta chimica o miglioramento. Nobel designò la  Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences al conferimento del premio per la chimica e per sua volontà "non deve essere data importanza alla nazionalità dei candidati, ma il premio deve andare al più meritevole, sia esso scandinavo oppure no".
